Quick answer
Most Indian airlines allow one cabin bag up to 7 kg, with total dimensions of 115 cm (length + width + height). Air India also lists a box size of 55 x 40 x 20 cm. A standard 55 cm trolley usually fits, but the depth and the wheels are where bags go over. Measure the whole bag and check your airline’s page before you fly.
Cabin baggage limits are short numbers on long pages, and different travel sites quote different figures for the same airline. We checked the airlines’ own pages where they loaded and mark every row below by how we confirmed it.

Why the caution: airlines change limits, fares can differ, and blog posts copy each other. For anything you are relying on, open the airline’s own baggage page for your fare and date. If we have one wrong, tell us and we will fix it.
How to measure your cabin bag
- Measure the full outside. Include wheels, the telescopic handle housing, the top handle and any bulging pocket.
- Add the three numbers. Height + width + depth should not go over the airline’s total (115 cm for most).
- Check the box size too. Air India lists 55 x 40 x 20 cm as well as the total. A bag with a depth of 23 cm can pass the total and still fail the box, so treat the stricter number as your limit.
- Weigh it packed. Use a luggage scale and leave a small margin, since scales differ.
- Keep a screenshot of the airline’s limit on your phone in case the staff quote a different figure.
The one-bag rule
Air India says passengers may carry only one piece of hand baggage under Indian security rules (it cites the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security’s one-hand-baggage rule), plus one small personal item that fits under the seat in front. That is why a handbag or laptop bag usually travels with a trolley, not a second trolley.
Choosing a bag that fits
If you are buying a cabin bag, look for the full outside dimensions on the listing, including wheels, and an empty weight low enough to leave room for your 7 kg. Our guide to the best cabin trolley bags in India compares seven 55 cm hard cases and says what to check on each listing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cabin baggage limit on Indian airlines?
Most Indian airlines allow one cabin bag of up to 7 kg. Size is usually stated as a total of 115 cm (length plus width plus height), and some airlines also list a box size such as 55 x 40 x 20 cm. Always check your own airline’s page for the fare you bought.
Can I carry two bags into the cabin?
Under the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security’s one-hand-baggage rule, which Air India cites, you may carry one piece of hand baggage. Air India also allows one small personal item that fits under the seat, such as a handbag or laptop bag. Rules for personal items differ by airline.
Do wheels and handles count in the size?
Yes, measure the full outside of the bag, including wheels, handles and any pockets that stick out. A bag that is 55 cm on the product page can measure more once the wheels are counted.
Is a 55 cm trolley bag allowed as cabin luggage?
A 55 cm bag is the usual cabin size, but fitting depends on all three measurements and the total. Check the full dimensions on the listing against your airline’s limit, and leave a small margin.
Will my cabin bag be weighed?
It can be. Airlines state a weight limit for cabin baggage and may check it at the gate or the check-in counter. An empty hard-case bag can weigh 2 to 3 kg, so check the empty weight before you buy.
Is the limit the same for domestic and international flights?
On Akasa Air’s page the cabin allowance is the same for both. Some airlines allow more in business class, and Air India lists 10 kg for First and Business. Check the airline’s page for your route and cabin.
